At the beginning of the year I made a list of 21 goals I hope to achieve and fulfil before I turn 22 and it is my pleasure to announce that I have managed to set up an opportunity, which I hope will lead to me fulfilling one such a goal. I’m so excited!
Exhibit my designs I have been carrying photographs of my designs on me every time I went into town to shop, or browse at thrift stores. Carrying my book on me I felt like a struggling model going to go-sees. One of the shops I went to was an eclectic mix of handmade accessories, clothes and decor and vintage designer threads. I was so in love with the place that I ended up buyinga wonderfully colourful quilt, which is the only thing on my new bed right now. I also bought candle-holders and an incense holder.
The owner of this store loved two of my pieces and made the right noises – at least what sounded like the right noises to me. Today she phoned me to say that she’d love to buy one item outright then display the other. What this means is that I will make money on the one item whether or not people buy it (good vibes, people will buy it.) She’ll then mark it up by 25% and sell it, when the second item sells I will pay her 10% of the sale.
This is a great chance to make some money, apparently nothing beats getting a bit of monetary reward for your passion. It is also an opportunity to expand – or is it establish – my reach and put my name out there as a designer. Nothing ever beats word of mouth. What I am counting on is that the shop’s market and customers will see my two designs and not be particularly fond of them. But they will ask the owner about me, something along the lines of “what else can she do, do you know?” And that is the biggest power we have in the creative arts. The power that all of us covet, to get someone’s attention long enough for them to ask that question.
Do you know how great a brand new bed looks in nothing but a quilt? Try that look, I recommend it.
Have a super weekend!
