I love my country, I love that we are funny and mostly caring people. I love KZN beaches and Cape Town eateries. I love the Johannesburg nightlife and the quiet of nature in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. With all that said I cannot stand our winters! The cold alone is enough to send me ten blankets deep into my bed but I can't hibernate for three months. Not only is it economically inviable, it's also not up my speed. I'm a social butterfly; we brave freezing nights to go out into the world -- but we flat best in warm weather. In my daydreams of the Northern Hemisphere summer I visit these beautiful destinations.
1. Paris, France
Paris in the summer will remain as only a dream to me because 1) I can't afford it and 2) I'm not at all certain that I actually want to experience it. What is Paris when all the Parisian people have gone on holiday? What is Paris when all the cafes are filled with people trying to have their Paris Cafe Dream come true? I go to Paris to eat, walk, laugh and watch people who live there live. Still I would love to be able to afford to be at one of these festivals.
2. Cancun, Mexico
Beautiful beaches, great sun... Need I say more? Fruit salads in my cabin and that salsa beat all night long on the beach. Maybe I'll find myself feeling all adventurous and go diving in their reefs. There is some history in the form of Mayan sites, which I would spend my days visiting. Who knows, I might be present when they discover an artifact thought long lost... This is where my heart goes to daydream of Mexico's warmth when the Johannesburg cold is about to consume me.
3. Casablanca, Morocco
There are times when I don't feel like leaving the safety and warmth of Africa. I wonder if a stroll on the beach would feel the same way it does in Cape Town. But more than anything, as a former Pop Princess myself, I would love to sit in Rick's Cafe just as much as I loved sitting in Katz's Delicatessens on my first non-work trip to The Big Apple; yes, I had what she had.
I still love you Jo'burg, but summer can't come fast enough
