Full house: going green

Every spot will be occupied, but I like to believe that the more the merrier.

The farm turns into a bit of a circus every holiday season and I mean during the June school holidays, Easter break and most long weekends. I’m not complaining because it usually means more hands to help around the farm, in the community and more hands that are going to give. The older children only come home towards the New Year, it’s a house rule – those who start the year together stay together. So we all try to be together in the first day of the New Year. I have only one child leaving this year; she is going to be with her maternal family and will only be back on the 30th. Two of my girls’ siblings are coming to be with their sisters and will be spending the holidays with us. There are also couple of friends coming in from Namibia and Australia, so Eden will be a full house.

The friends aren’t coming in to be with us, they’re coming in to enjoy the scenery and I’m just offering them comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price. There aren’t that many green guest housesthat offer a bed and everything at a reasonable price.

I take guests in all times of the year; most of the people who come to stay with us are also individuals who enjoy conscious living and giving back, just like I am. It’s not mandatory that they help with the charities I work with or in the community but most of them are willing to. I have a couple from Canada that has been visiting during their summer for a month to help out at the local primary school. We have a garden, which is used in the school’s nutrition programme and we’ve helped the school build a playground.  We try to plant as many trees annually as we can.

The local clinic has a doula programme, which during its building days was supported by a pair of doulas from Dallas, Texas who had come to stay for a couple of weeks but ended up staying a month and a half. They are still in touch with the clinic. I always try to accommodate guests who want to make a difference but don’t necessarily have the means, travelling with a purpose  mostly takes the desire to make a difference.

For eco-friendly accommodation around the country, book a bed.
