Let's celebrate SLEEP! Today is the day that a small furry animal awakes from its Winter slumber, comes out into the light and let's everyone know how much longer Winter will last. Today is international Groundhog Day!
Groundhog day AKA 'Candlemas' is celebrated on the 2nd of February each year. The celebration of Groundhog Day began around the 18th and 19th century in Pensylvanian Germany and was adopted in Scotland, England and Pensylvania in the USA. It is a very popular holiday in the northern hemisphere where there is much excitement when the groundhog emerges from his Winter slumber and comes out to predict if the Winter will persist or if temperatures will begin to rise.
If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again
Given the current sticky South African summer conditions, it is difficult to imagine wanting it to get any hotter here, however, I am sure that after a month back at work most SAFAs will be happy to celebrate a holiday that promotes hibernation.
