A while back one of my kids called me into the homework room with a very excited tone, she was on the computer and wanted me to see a funny meme she'd found on the internet, yes it's the above picture. She went on to explain that it was a reference to the best teen movie of our time. I suspect this is something The Pop Princess would have understood better. But still, she had me thinking about veganism and why I still feel it's not for me.
Veganism is a lifestyle that involves more than just not eating meat or any other animal products. It is a holistic approach that touches an individual's entire lifestyle and deems the use of animal products as unethical. This means leather shoes, silk sheets and honey are also off the able.
Different people practice veganism for varying reasons, be it dietary, which is often viewed by most vegans as unethical veganism. I do care about what goes into my body, I care about the environment and I also care abut the ethical treatment of animals. I suppose it's the label that makes me uncomfortable — I know what you must be thinking, I'm the same woman who labels herself an urban hippie.
I truly admire people who have committed their lives to this cause by adopting the vegan lifestyle I just don't feel that at this point in my life I would be able to sustain the lifestyle in a standard that would please me. No it's not about the meat — we hardly ever eat meat as it is. I also do not view the lifestyle as expensive because I try to grow most of what I eat, if I don't grow it I know there'll be someone at the market who managed to grow it. I just feel that it would require a lot of vigilance from my side, for example I started using soy milk in my early 30s and it's all me have at home but there are a few cows on the farm, when there is milk we supply it to the dairy in town. As a vegan I would be able to d that. So I choose to live conscious of what my family and I consume without labeling that consciousness.
I also admire those of you who make made meat-free Mondays a part of your lifestyles — that's how we change the world. We do what we can where we are.
