Next week I will be starting my final year of college, I can’t wait! As exciting as this is – I can’t begin to describe how exciting – it is also going to be the busiest and undoubtedly most stressful year of my life so far. The Dean said this week during orientation: “If you’re lucky this is going to be the beginning of your life as you know it, with no time to stop. Soon the waiting periods (waiting for the bus, waiting for the microwave to ding) will be where you brainstorm. Bringing experience and life into your work and your designs.” I truly hope that this year sets the tone of the rest of my life as a creative.
With all this work coming up, my parents (usually referred to as “the account payers”) and I have decided that it would be better if I move in with my older sister and her family. It’s not as much of a drag as it sounds, they live 30 minutes from the college and their cottage is gorgeous! With one bedroom and its own entrance – I figure I’m practically living on my own. Plus, I get to play auntie on the regular. Who knows, I might get so much inspiration that I end up designing the most stylish kids’ range this country has seen.
The above image I made on Polyvore is my initial brainstorm for the place – with this site by my side I think I’ll be in Elle for my layouts before my designs make it big. I need a couch, a desk is a must-have, and the rest of the living room will be a design station. Our friends over at The Furnishing Touch have been a great help for me when it comes to ideas for my new space.
The afore mentioned account payers have been explicit in their unwillingness to give me a Grafton Everest couch as a fleeing the nest present, arguing that they’ll have to spring for another Sealy Posturepedic. while I understand where they’re coming from, I’m going to come right out and admit to having gotten my sulk on for a few minutes, until it dawned on me that a good quality bed is probably a lot more of a necessity than a couch right now – beauty sleep is something I simply cannot live without!
Please wish me luck with all the moving house I will be doing this weekend. I’ll start visiting thrift stores in a week or so. Considering that all I have so far is a new bed and a lovely lamp for my future desk.
Cheers to the busiest year of my life as it unfolds, and oh, my career as a layout artist.
There will be minimal sleep for the wicked.
