Oils that help trigger sleep

Oils are getting a lot of attention at the moment. They are upfront and centre stage and have transformed from oil-slick uncool to sexy and sought after. 'Carrier' oils like coconut oil, avocado oil, flaxseed and argon oil are showing up in both beauty and health products from moisturizers to hair smoothing serums to make-up removers.

Oils have been used for centuries as balms or healing aids. The 'essential' oils such as chamomile, lavender and marjoram are well known for their sleep promoting effects.

Oils can be:

1. dabbed onto the temples and other pulse points to relieve anxiety and tension;

2. added to a diffuser to flood a room with a soothing scent;

3. or used to enhance a massage to relieve tension and pain and promote sleep.

At times the essential oils are too potent to use in their concentrated form (and at times such as pregnancy best avoided) so the idea is to pick a great, stable carrier oil (like coconut) and add a few drops of an essential oil (like lavender) to make a soothing sleep balm. Alternatively, you can use the carrier oil all on its own.
