Sleepless in Hollywood

Did you know that the most common sleep disorders are insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy? I didn't. I found this out in a bizarre way that included a thorough (Google) search of little known facts about F Scott Fitzgerald, who also suffered from insomnia.

Insomnia:

According to Wiki this sleeping disorder "is most often thought of as both a sign and a symptom that can accompany several sleep, medical, and psychiatric disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality. Insomnia is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. One definition of insomnia is "difficulties initiating and/or maintaining sleep, or nonrestorative sleep, associated with impairments of daytime functioning or marked distress for more than 1 month."

The deaths of celebrities like Heath Ledger who was known to suffer from the inability to sleep and as a result often used medical sleeping aids has put the spotlight on the dangers of insomnia.

It is often the more creative of the crop: Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and Eminem that have been reported to suffer from this condition. Which makes me wonder if it's the inability to turn off the creative buzz that prevents them from falling asleep.

Sleep Apnea: 

"Common effects of sleep apnea include daytime fatigue, a slower reaction time, and vision problems." Says the Wiki article. Sleep apnea can be defined as a pause in breathing that occurs during sleep.  It is reportedly common in people who are overweight. The fact that people cannot feel it when it happens causes delayed diagnosis. A famous person who is known to suffer from this sleep problem is former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal.

Narcolepsy:

Narcolepsy is a nervous system disorder whose exact cause is unknown. According to this the symptoms usually surface between 15 an 20 years of age and they include:

  • Periods of extreme drowsiness during the day. You may feel a strong urge to sleep, often followed by a short nap;
  • these periods last for about 15 minutes each, although they can be longer.
  • Most often, you wake up feeling refreshed.
As a cautionary measure narcoleptic people should avoid  alcohol or any food and drink that may relax the nervous system. For further information on this sleeping disorder go here.
In 2003 comedian/TV host Jimmy Kimmel gave an interview and said: "Truth be told, I'd rather have narcolepsy than not have it."
