The most common sleep disorder

Symptoms are grouped into medical diagnoses and described in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals around the world. It has been revised and published five times by The American Psychiatric Association and is now known as the DSM V or DSM 5. The most common symptoms of sleep disorder are difficulty falling asleep and difficulty maintaining sleep. These symptoms have been given the name insomnia: in meaning inability somnia meaning sleep.

To be diagnosed as an insomniac you must meet a certain number of criteria according to the DSMV. The more criteria met, the more severe the insomnia.

 A1. The predominant complaint is difficulty falling asleep

  • It takes more than 30 minutes to fall asleep
  • and this occurs 3 or more times per week

A2. The predominant complaint is maintaining sleep

  • There are multiple awakenings and it can take 30minutes or more to fall back to sleep or
  • Waking up 30minutes or more too early in the morning
  • and this occurs 3 or more times per week

A3. The predominant complaint is non-restorative sleep

  • There is access to adequate sleep but there are complaints of not feeling refreshed in the morning or
  • There is difficulty waking up in morning
  • And this occurs 3 or more times per week

B. The sleep disturbance is causing significant clinical distress and impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning.

  • Reduced motivation
  • Reduced performance at work, school or social activities
  • Errors or accidents
  • Irritability, nerves and mood disturbance
  • Daytime attention, concentration or memory problems
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Concern or worries about sleep
  • Sleep disturbance interferes with home maintenance, work and/or close relationships
